Today I ventured into the way beyond the dark side.
I've been testing out all kinds of techniques for urushi, not gloss, that's boring. Keep an eye out for some wild abstract patterns on route. If this works and it all dries well I'll open this as a saya service for nihonto and spears.
Here is my first attempt. The urushi was a little too wet and I dried it too quickly, so there are some bubbles. I also cut it back when it hadn't fully dried, all school boy errors.
I'll get rid of that next time round.
The technique is called shibo-nuri, I don't get to use this on katchu, so its presenting a challenge. There's over 250 variants with this style, you can add metal leaf, powders and so on. For the test I've rubbed in some red urushi to highlight the design and errors.
