Numerous metal working tasks are shown, most interesting too me is the lathe in the the foreground which seems to be operated by a reciprocal arm action by the assistant using a length of cloth passed around the central spindle; much in the same way a bow drill is operated.

Malcolm, Exactly the same type of lathe as was used throughout the world until the introduction of the treadle allowed continuous rotation in one direction. I quite liked the guys making tsuba and other fittings. Reminds me of the famous screen from Kawagoe. Ian B
