i know there is no one book abaut it. The reason probably is that each yumishi has its own method to build urushi-yumi and shigeto-yumi. I have seen a lot of old yumi, urushi and shigeto yumi, and i build yumi too, but I developed my own method, because there are many ways to do it.
Isak sorry for my delay No there is no particular meaning in the shigeto yumi. The wrapping start only as a reinforcement for the bow and in the year became an ornament. Only the ikkyo kyu (the yumi for generals, taisho) the wrapping as a meaning. This bow came from the Ogasawara school tradition and the samurai thet racived this bow means he reach the Highest skill in the school. Under the nigiri there are 28 legature rappresenting 28 constellations and up the nigiri there are 36 legature meaning 36 birds as rappresentative of all world, the sky and the earth. The meaning of this legature came from the chinese tradition and rappresent the chinese concept of the univers and the world.
Same clan as his own style of legature but as no real meaning. The shigeto yumi was the simbol of the samurai but often was used also in shinto or Buddhist ceremonies
Samurai-The Weapons and Spirit of the Japanese Warrior by Clive Sinclaire
This book has a nice little chapter on archery. Not too in-depth though. It includes a picture, which I am not yet able to attach, depicting the parts of a bow named after 36 gods and 28 constellations.
Separately, does anyone know of any books listing the makers of bows through the ages? Specifically what the lacquered signatures look like.
Isak, Try 'Zen in the art of archery'. It isn't about traditional archery but interesting. Ian B
Here is another book.
Kyudo: The Essence and Practice of Japanese Archery, Hideharu Onuma, 1993, Kyudo is Japan's oldest traditional martial art and the one most closely associated with bushido. After the Second World War Eugen Herrigel introduced the concept of kyudo to the West in his classic Zen in the Art of Japanese Archery. But until now, no Japanese kyudo master has published a book on his art in English.
